Grand Central Market Downtown Los Angeles

The Grand Central Market is one of my favorite downtown LA spots.  It is full daily of fresh fruits and vegetables brought in to the market from area farms.  The market also has meat markets, herbal tea shops, spice vendors and numerous eateries all surrounded by vintage sign age and fresh sawdust on the floors. It was built in 1917 and today it feels like you can step back in time.

I love coming to the market to buy fresh fruits and vegetables but my favorite place is a little Chinese Cafe which has been operating in the market for over 40 years.  The line starts at 9 am and goes out the door!  They have the best Won Ton Soup I have ever tasted anywhere!  It is a great little dining counter with handwritten tickets and a cash register that never closes.  My  waitress name is America and she is awesome and always make sure that she takes good care of me.  If you are ever in LA.....you must be this on the to do list!

Cupcake Craze

The cupcake craze began in Los Angeles and continues to go to new levels in Los Angeles. Each day I am  amazed at cupcake artistry. I immediately got hooked on the craze after visiting some of the areas finest cupcake shops with my daughter, Bianca. We visited Babycakes in the arts district, the Cupcakery in Hollywood and of course Sprinkles where the line continues down the sidewalk. Within days I was at the bookstore buying every book on cupcakes I could find.

We have seen cupcakes created as lions, tigers, bears and any other kind of animal you can imagine.  There are cupcake designs which create a complete scene, such as a circus, an artist palette, an apple harvest bushel, bowling pins and a bowling ball, a sleepover pajama party, Noah's Ark, pool balls and rack and even a vegetable garden.  The designs are endless!  The recipes range from a simple ingredient to the latest banana, mango, pineapple and macadamia nut mixture.

The endless possibilities of cupcakes has certainly caught my attention.  I would like to share some of the inspirations I found with you...

An artist palette in the bright colors of the rainbow. The wooden artist palette is available at most arts and crafts stores.  The brush in the center is made from a bread stick for the handle and a tootsie roll for the brush. Great for any occasion!

Bake sale pies topped with red and blue m&m's!

Cupcake Vegetable Garden. One of the most difficult but also one of the best!

Harvest Time. A bushel of red ripe apples!  Made by adding a small donut and topped with a stem and leaf.

Cupcake Monsters!!  Furry little cupcakes with lollipop eyes of rolled out gum drops and m&m's!

Panda bears with Oreo arms and fruit loops for ears.  Served on a bed of grass in a wooden tray.

Bianca really liked this one.  Little baby penguins marching to sea!

Simple but so cute!  A scarecrow with gum drop patches on his britches and a graham cracker hat! The burlap background on the serving tray brings in the feeling of Fall.

Sharks, waves, life rings, fish and buoys!  What a great idea for a little guy's birthday party!  The rocks and sailors rope really being it all together.

I found these great designs from the Hello, Cupcake! and What's New Cupcake? books by Karen Tack and Alan Richardson.
